Meet the team

We’re a friendly bunch of fine wine loving faces who love nothing more than helping others discover the same wines we taste day in, day out. We’ve been at it for over 160 years, and are now setting out to change the way people buy fine wine.

Our Team

  • Katy Andersen
    Managing Director
    Tel: +44 (0)7736456987

Having joined the team in early 2016, Katy comes to us from the startups onefinestay and US-based Lot18, though her passion for wine was born while living in the Piedmont for a year.
In the office, she’s most likely to be working on our customer engagement or marketing efforts, and outside she may be in the kitchen with an Ottolenghi cookbook open, or uncorking an interesting bottle from a trip to the Piedmont, Burgundy or even the Mosel.

  • David Payne
    Head of Sales
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 214

David’s passion for fine wine began at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire where he was butler to the 11th Duke of Devonshire and Deborah Mitford, the then Duchess and their family. Having served wine to people such as Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, he took this excellent apprenticeship to London where he began a 24 year career in both retail and direct wine sales.

Having sold wines in Spain, Italy, Germany, China, Hong Kong and South Africa, he joined us in the spring of 2016 out in Colchester to lead our wine advisors as they set out to ensure we match the best wines possible with our lovely customers.

Wine Consultants

  • Adrian Heaven
    Head of Private Client Sales
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 241

After working for several different London wine merchants over the years, Adrian joined Lay & Wheeler in 2007. His days are filled with conversations with customers, discussing the merits of Rieslings from Austria’s Wachau region or the best of the Bordeaux en primeur tastings.

Adrian enjoys a break from wine on his road bike, or with his family over a meal. Lamb and Barolo, perhaps?

  • Francesca Dick-Hazell
    Wine Trading Assistant
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 211

Frankie’s new to the team, but not new to wine, having grown up between England and France where good wine flowed. Now, here at Lay & Wheeler, she helps with our trading business, selling and moving wine on behalf of our customers as they make changes to their cellars. When we open a good bottle in the office, she’s particularly keen for a taste of champagne, not least if it happens to be Krug. And if there’s a chance to enjoy it by the sea, with a bit of pasta, there’s nothing she’d like better.

  • Toby Dillaway
    Cellar Circle Account Manager
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 228

With his experience working at Adnams Brewery, you might think Toby prefers beer to wine, but his encyclopaedic knowledge of vintages and predilection for the champagnes of Jacques Selosse upholds his loyalties. Perhaps it's his WSET Diploma at work!

When he’s not speaking with Cellar Circle members about their portfolios, or tasting a new wine in the office, you’ll find him with his children or with a glass of something nice.

  • Karen Graves
    Account Manager
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 259

In 2004, Karen joined Lay & Wheeler to manage account trading and broking, with experience on the other side of the trade, having managed a Welsh vineyard of all things.

When she’s not helping to sell wine on behalf of our customers, she’s likely enjoying a good bottle of Bordeaux with her family, or perhaps on a trip to her favorite wine region, the Côte de Beaune.

  • Will Hepworth
    Cellar Circle Account Manager
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 257

When Will joined our team in 2011, he was familiar with the Majestic family having spent eleven years in stores. When he’s not tasting and choosing wines for our Cellar Circle members, he’s probably off cycling the country lanes of Colchester, or dreaming about a Nebuchadnezzar of Montrachet (his desert island wine, if you must know). It will thus come as no surprise his favourite wine region is “compellingly complicated” Burgundy.

  • Jamie Lawrence
    Wine Consultant
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 215

We are fortunate to welcome Jamie in spring of 2016 from a successful six year stint running not just one but three Majestic stores, most recently the Market Harborough store.

In his words, Gewurztraminer ‘ignited my passion for wine’ and his soft spot for Alsace is evident. However, he also has a soft spot for red and white Burgundy, and his guilty pleasure is Viognier and Super Tuscans. When he’s not advising a customer, he’s likely studying for the WSET Diploma, or helping to organise a wine tasting for charity. And Jamie’s favourite pastime is spending time with family and friends, with excellent food and wine no less!

  • Ludovic Surina
    Account Manager
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 244

Ludo, as he’s known across the team, has been a part of our group since the autumn of 2010, after managing Majestic stores for over six years. He’s always up for a chat about wine, and also supplies our office with a steady stream of homemade freshly baked sourdough bread. His favourite wine region is Northern Rhône for the wine, and Tuscany for the landscape, though out of hours we’re more likely to find him out cycling or playing tennis, ahead of his next trip (or sip) of Hermitage or Gevrey-Chambertin.

The Customer Service Team

  • Pauline Barr
    Customer Service Assistant
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 237

Pauline has been at Lay and Wheeler since April of 2008, after working in the public sector. If an email enquiry comes through or a live chat request pops up, it’s likely Pauline will be there to help.

If pressed for a favorite wine, she’d choose a premier cru white Burgundy from Etienne Sauzet, and equally enjoys visiting Burgundy.

Outside the office, however, Pauline is likely to be running, having completed the London Marathon in 2012.

  • Kelly Westworth
    Customer Service Assistant
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 203

Kelly came to our countryside office in July of 2014, having finished University and graduated to the world of wine. She’s always up for a taste of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc when we open a good one in the office when she’s not fielding questions from our customers and helping to make sure every order is tip top. Her evenings and weekends are filled with time with her dogs, as well as learning British sign language.

Buying and Operations

  • Rick Terry
    E-Commerce Technical Manager
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 235

Rick joined Lay & Wheeler in 1995 to help with the Christmas season and has been on the team ever since. He started out delivering wine to customers, then helped out with tastings before settling into his current role managing our ecommerce and IT needs. His favourite wines tend to be the quirkier ones — sparkling Shiraz or Tokaji essencia being excellent examples.

As he is the father of two sports-mad girls, most evenings and weekends he's down on the tennis courts or at the gymnasium.

  • Robbie Toothill
    Merchandising Manager
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 254

After working in Majestic stores for several months, Robbie joined the team at Lay & Wheeler in 2014 to combine his love of wine with his passion for meeting producers and writing about their successes in our brochures and our magazine Cellar Door.

His loyalties lie with the Loire, though he wouldn’t ever pass up the chance to visit Burgundy, nor would he turn down a glass of vin jaune with a nibble of 36-month old Comte, if his wife allows it!

  • Micah Dougall
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 207

In 2014, Micah made his way out to our idyllic space in Colchester after earning his stripes at Majestic. He’s more frequently on the road, however, heading down the back roads of Burgundy or across the hilltops of the Piedmont seeing farmers, their vines and their cellars. If there’s the chance to stop off for a plate of tajarin pasta with warm ragu and a mature Barbaresco, he won’t pass it up – it’s fortunate he cycles to work!

  • Tamara Vetesi
    Shipping & Stock Controller
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 209

Tamara joined our team in June 2015, where she applies her experience with shipping products and stock control here in at Lay & Wheeler, tracking and managing the whereabouts of our wines. Her favourite bottle is a Romanian wine, Princess Cadarca Reserve, one she enjoys most with roasted lamb and homemade green pesto with mint. Tamara is also studying for an honours degree in maths, though outside the office you’re also likely to find her on a mountain bike.

  • Cheryl Lee
    Buying Administrator
    Tel: +44 (0)1473 313 206

After spending time with the customer service team at the Wine Society, Cheryl joined us in early 2016 to help out with all of our wine buying activity. Her days are filled with conversations with our wonderful wine producers all over the world, and making sure their wines are available for our customers.

She’s happiest with a cycle ride and pub lunch to look forward to, and if Champagne is involved, even better.
