2004 Château Mouton-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac

2004 Château Mouton-Rothschild, 1er Cru Pauillac

A complex blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, with yields as low as 25hl/ha in some of the older parcels. Rigorous selection meant that only 57% went into the grand vin this year. The colour of shiny black cherries because the skins thickened during the dry early summer. Lots of dense sweet cassis on the nose and palate, almost Californian in style but more restrained yet without a hint of austerity. Chewy but perfectly ripe tannins and fresh acidity. Less marked by the high percentage of new oak (92%) than in some years, partly because the toast level of the barrels has been reduced since 2000 and partly due to the density of the fruit. It has a warmth and unctuousness that gives is more immediate appeal than Latour or Lafite.
