This wine, for one of our favourite growers in Champagne, has spent a staggering 15 years and 9 months on lees before disgorgement. This is because Benoit and Melanie Tarlant understand the unmatched deliciousness that this type of ageing imparts. The wine has absolutely no dosage (as is the case with almost all of their wines), and gains its richness and structure from its quality of fruit and long ageing. The fruit all comes from a single parcel of Les Crayons in Oeuilly, which was planted in 1948 by Louis Tarlant. It is a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir. It is a fabulous bright gold colour. The nose has a sour lemon, russet apple, seaspray, and sourdough bread aroma. The deeply scented character follows through on the palate, which displays electric freshness from the acidity, and mouthwatering savoury texture from lees ageing. Astonishingly good.
