Responsible in no small part for introducing a whole generation to wine during the 1980s, Australia has found it hard to shake its image of big, oaky Chardonnay and very ripe reds. However, alongside the established historic producers that have maintained a high level of quality throughout, there is a new wave of younger winemakers, taking Australian wine to a whole new level. They are even rethinking Australian Chardonnay as taut, mineral and focussed. The ‘80s are well behind Australia.
