We are thrilled to welcome Paolo de Marchi, of the beloved Chianti estate Isole e Olena, and his son Luca de Marchi, who runs the northern Piedmont trailblazer Proprietà Sperino.
This Piemontese family is one of the great trailblazers in all of Italy.
They unified the two historic estates of Isole and Olena in the 1950s. Paolo took the helm in 1976, and put the estate firmly on the international fine wine map. He introduced their top wine, Cepparello, in 1980 when, due to appellation law, it couldn’t be labelled as Chianti Classico because it was 100% Sangiovese (they refused to mix in a little white wine, part of . the recipe by law). It’s now one of the region’s icons.
But long before Isole e Olena, the family owned another wine-producing property, in northern Italy. Somewhat forgotten, Paolo’s adult son Luca didn’t even hear about it until he was looking for a quiet place to finish his dissertation near the University of Turin, where he was studying. Luca found himself on the footsteps of Proprieta Sperino, a 7.7 hectare concern in northern Piedmont in Lessona, an area once the most prodigious wine region on the entire peninsula. With the irrepressible, passionate, and intellectual Luca at the helm, Proprieta Sperino has been firmly restored to all its glory.
We’ve never managed to spend less than half a day with either of these two dynamic maestros. This promises to be one of our very best dinners of the year.
