Château Bellegrave makes classic, easy-drinking Bordeaux from its home in the south-west of Pomerol, the small but well-regarded Right Bank appellation. The estate was bought by Jean and Andrée Bouldy in 1951 and is now run by their children, Jean-Marie and his wife, Pascale. Their great grandchildren, Jean-Baptiste and Aurélie, joined in 2014 and 2015, continuing the family’s winemaking legacy. Château Bellegrave’s 8 hectares are predominantly Merlot, as is common in Pomerol, with a little Cabernet Franc also grown. The vines are situated on the appellation’s unique crasse de fer soils, a mix of gravel, clay and sand rich in iron oxide. The emphasis at the chateau is vineyard health - Château Bellegrave takes credit for being one of the first estates in Pomerol to convert to organic farming, beginning in 2001 and gaining official certification in 2009. Today, wildlife including hares and birds nest between the rows and pesticides are nowhere to be seen. Grapes are hand harvested, carefully sorted and allowed to ‘naturally’ ferment and macerate in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is matured for at least 20 months in specially selected oak barrels from the Forest of Tronçais and this fine-grained wood imparts delicate flavours without dominating the fine fruit.
