2019 Grus, Viñedos de Alcohuaz, Elqui Valley

2019 Grus, Viñedos de Alcohuaz, Elqui Valley

The 2019 Grus was produced with a blend of 75% Syrah, 13% Petite Sirah, 7% Garnacha, 2% Malbec, 2% Cariñena and 1% Petit Verdot. They use a large proportion, up to 60% whole bunch and ferment naturally in stone lagares, before transferring to a combination of foudres and concrete eggs for maturation. The result is a lovely fresh red with mineral, flinty texture, moderate alcohol and savoury complexity. Harvesting early compared to their compatriots keeps the fruit fresh and the wine bright and lively.

Viñedos de Alcohuaz

We think Marcelo Retamal (who everyone knows as Reta) is one of Chile’s most exciting winemakers. He worked for leading family winery De Martino for 23 years, and he estimates that he’s made wine in over 350 different vineyards and wine regions along the breadth of Chile, as well as visiting wine regions ranging from Greece and Georgia to Australia and Alsace. He left in 2021 and now has two personal projects on the go. One is Viñedos Alcohuaz, which is based in a small village at the top of the Elqui Valley, the highest commercial vineyard in Chile. The wines here are full of spicy, mineral character, with brightness from altitude.
