2017 Syrah, Boekenhoutskloof, Swartland

2017 Syrah, Boekenhoutskloof, Swartland

14.1% abv. Smoky on the nose. Fruit comes from two properties: 50% Porseleinberg, 50% Goldmine. 80% is aged in foudres, 20% demi-muids. Very pure and elegant, saline and floral. Touch of herbal character, lovely minerality and great juicy fruit. Dark fruit, black olive and lovely texture. Amazing purity on the finish, saline and long.

Tasting notes

Gottfried Mocke has the advantage of using grapes from two contrasting but equally wonderful Syrah sites to produce this impressive red: Goldmine on decomposed schist and Porseleinberg on rocky, unyielding schist. Showing subtle stony aromas, it's deftly oaked, layered and very complex, with cherry and blackberry fruit, nuanced tannins and racy, refreshing acidity. One of the Cape's best examples.
