From a 1977 Piekenierskloof vineyard planted on decomposed sandstone, this is floral and delicate with such a lightness of touch about it. Brilliant Chenin Blanc from one of South Africa’s brightest stars.
The 2017 Skuinskap Steen Chenin Blanc comes from Chenin Blanc trained on vines planted on decomposed sandstone soils that tend to ripen particularly slowly. It has slightly more vigor on the nose, where fennel and peppermint infuse yellow stone fruit, all nicely defined. The palate is well balanced with a taut line of acidity and quite saline in the mouth; a touch of stem ginger and white pepper surfaces toward the persistent finish. Excellent.
