The cooler climate of Coonawarra is best known for Cabernet, but as Penfolds demonstrate with this release it is more than capable of producing sublime Shiraz – especially under the near-perfect growing season and vintage of 2012. Balance here is the key and all components are in equilibrium, with wonderfully fresh aromatics, ripe, juicy dark-berried fruit with just a touch of savoury leather and spice adding extra complexity. This is all held together by mouth-coating tannins that are so soft and supple. As Peter Gago rightly points out this is “one of the tasting highlights of the 2014 Penfold Bin releases”.
