Lightly sparkling, with notes of pear and grape, yet retaining minerality and a sense of focus, it’s the perfect match for fruit salads or lighter desserts. Or even just drink it on its own.

499 refers to the high altitude of the vineyards of this estate, which compares to an altitude of 213m in Barolo. It’s the brainchild of vineyard manager Gabriele Saffrio and winemaker Mario Andrion, who’s also winemaker of Castello di Verduno. Their focus is two forgotten varieties: Freisa and Moscato, and they seek to make the purest expression possible of these two grape varieties. They succeed with flying colours: these are two delicious wines, that offer almost unrivalled value for money.
