2017 Langhe Freisa, Azienda Agricola 499, Piedmont

2017 Langhe Freisa, Azienda Agricola 499, Piedmont

Freisa is a forgotten grape variety of the Langhe. High up in the commune of Camo, Mario and Gabriele are showing just how good it can be. Floral and fresh, with elements of red berry fruit, some herbal character, and also nicely grippy tannins, this is a wonderful alternative to a Langhe Nebbiolo.

Azienda Agricola 499

499 refers to the high altitude of the vineyards of this estate, which compares to an altitude of 213m in Barolo. It’s the brainchild of vineyard manager Gabriele Saffrio and winemaker Mario Andrion, who’s also winemaker of Castello di Verduno. Their focus is two forgotten varieties: Freisa and Moscato, and they seek to make the purest expression possible of these two grape varieties. They succeed with flying colours: these are two delicious wines, that offer almost unrivalled value for money.
