2010 Le Serre Nuove, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, Bolgheri, Tuscany

Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is the second wine of Ornellaia, one of the great ‘Super-Tuscans’ from the famous Bolgheri coast who sought to create a wine brand that would be recognisable on its own merits by consumers, out of restrictive DOC regulations. Ornellaia and illustrious neighbours Sassicaia eschew Sangiovese altogether and use only Cabernets Sauvignon & Franc and Merlot. Le Serre Nuove blends fruit from its own plots of vines to that of younger vines in the Ornellaia vineyards. Stretching out West toards the Sea,they benefit from the salty sea breeze cooling effect. This is truly a wine crafted as meticulously as the flagship wine. 45% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot, the 2010 Serre Nuove displays wonderful purity and depth of flavour, including plum, mocha, espresso and dark cherries. This is a beautiful, virile wine, endowed with considerable power and elegantly spiced, floral freshness. Undoubtedly a great opportunity to own a wine from this iconic estate – at a fraction of the price of its bigger brother.
