This single-vineyard wine is the jewel in Volpaia’s crown –100% Sangiovese from their unique high altitude hillsides. The 2009 is incredibly juicy, with ripe dark fruit and pretty florals; the fragrance reminiscent of a rose garden. On the palate, it is rich and voluptuous, with great acidity, concentration and a wonderfully long finish. During our visit, we tasted 1985 Coltassala, which was quite simply breathtaking – layers of truffles and leather, soft dried herbs, autumn leaves and earthy perfumed notes. Its freshness was outstanding – an indication of how well this wine ages. There is no doubt that the 2009 has a bright future ahead.
