2009 Barolo Monvigliero Riserva, Castello di Verduno, Piedmont

2009 Barolo Monvigliero Riserva, Castello di Verduno, Piedmont

A mere half-hectare of outstanding land and a tiny production, Monvigliero can be considered a Grand Cru of not only Verduno, but also of Barolo. Only produced in great years, 2009 shows how the generous warmth of the vintage marries perfectly with Monvigliero’s altitude and the cooling effect from the Tanaro river below. With a decadent yet cool expression of fruit, the perfume exudes from this with no hint of over-ripeness. Delicious.

Tasting notes

Gentle wine with ripe fruit and then refined tannins and, still, lots of grip. Long.

Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com (June 2017)
17/20

Powerfully built, this opens with a potpourri of aromas including pressed rose, violet, mature berry, baking spice and a whiff of leather. Dried black cherry, licorice, pipe tobacco, nutmeg and a balsamic note wrap around the gripping palate alongside a backbone of ripe, assertive tannins.
