2016 Pie Franco, Casa Castillo, Jumilla

2016 Pie Franco, Casa Castillo, Jumilla

This is Monastrell - known as Mourvèdre in Southern France, at its very best. It comes from a parcel of ancient vines that have thus far been immune to Phylloxera - hence it's called Pie Franco. Yet each year a few vines do succumb, so quantities are reducing year on year of this, one of Spain's most celebrated red wines. Wild berries, tapenade, wet stones and fennel and lavender all swirl from the glass, with a rich yet balanced palate that's wonderfully grippy and long. Brilliant.

Tasting notes

It has persistent and pungent flavors and is juicy within the dry and stony character of the texture.
