A relatively unknown, biodynamic producer in Crouttes-sur-Marne, the Bedel family has been involved in the production of champagne for around three generations, with Francois Bedel currently in charge. They have around 8 hectares of vineyard, situated in several towns either side of the river Marne. Interestingly it is the least championed of the three main champagne grape varieties that takes centre stage at this house, namely Pinot Meunier. Their flagship cuvee, Comme Autrefois, is a blend of 78% Pinot Meunier, 13% Chardonnay and 9% Pinot Noir, with the base wines aged entirely in oak barrels. This release is made exclusively from the 1998 vintage but, because the aim of the cuvee is an expression of terroir rather than vintage, this is not declared on the label. The wine itself reveals wonderful richness on the nose underpinned by floral lime notes and baked citrus characters. The palate is amazingly driven and focused with intense fruit and a long complex finish.
