2016 Les Béguines Extra Brut, La Closerie, Jérôme Prévost

2016 Les Béguines Extra Brut, La Closerie, Jérôme Prévost

90% Pinot Meunier, 10% Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris & Chardonnay. Jérôme Prévost is one of the most respected winemakers in Champagne, and his wines some of the most sought-after. He inherited his domaine in the mid-1980s and sold his grapes to negociants for 10 years before starting to bottle them himself after Anselme Selosse allowed him to use his cellar facilities. With just 2.2 hectares to his name, and a cult following his wines are extremely hard to get hold of. He gives particular importance to Pinot Meunier which he says is a misunderstood grape that does not have the reputation it deserves. It must be picked with good maturity to properly express its character. He is unsurprisingly a late picker, and his 2016 Les Béguines is a brilliant example of how successful this strategy is.

Tasting notes

This bottle of the NV Extra Brut Les Béguines LC 16 was disgorged without dosage, and it's showing superbly, bursting giant aromas of peach, pear, orange rind, dried white flowers and smoke. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, muscular and incisive, with racy acids, a deep and layered core and a long, saline finish. Prévost observed that, in terms of the quality of the grapes alone, 2016 was a better year for La Closerie than 2015.

The NV (2016) Extra-Brut Les Beguines is endowed with all the tension, energy and resonance readers have come to expect from these highly singular Champagnes. Lemon confit, mint, white flowers and crushed rocks all race out of the glass in an explosive, beautifully expressive Champagne that dazzles from the very first taste. In fact, 2016 is a rare vintage where I prefer the Blanc to the Rosé. In 2016, Jérôme Prévost blended in 10-15% reserve wines from 2015 along with drops of still red Meunier. More importantly, the 2016 is a Champagne readers will not want to miss, as it is absolutely compelling.
