N/V Les Vignes de Montegueux Extra Brut, Jacques Lassaigne

N/V Les Vignes de Montegueux Extra Brut, Jacques Lassaigne

100% Chardonnay. "One of Champagne's most exciting producers is Emmanuel Lassaigne" say William Kelley in his Wine Advocat report, noting his "style is powerful and vinous but also racy and electric." He owns just 3.5 hecatres of old vine Chardonnay in the unsung village of Montgueux in the Aube. His wines have done much to put this region on the map, and he has achieved a lot in a short space of time. In 2002 he says he had just two customers. So to go from there to be recognised as on of Champagne's greats is no mean feat. He doesn't fine or filter, and uses very minimal sulphur dioxide. This is a blend of 41% 2016, 32% 2015 and 27% 2014.

Tasting notes

The latest release of Lassaigne's NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Vignes de Montgueux is a blend of the 2016, 2015 and 2014 vintages, and is disgorged à la volée without dosage. Offering up a lively bouquet of green apples, freshly baked bread, white peach and pastry cream, it's medium to full-bodied, taut and racy, with a lively spine of acidity, lovely purity and a long, searingly chalky finish. Lassaigne characterizes this as his "apéro" cuvée—modestly, as this makes for a decidedly serious apéritif.
