1990 Vin Jaune, Fruitière Vinicole d'Arbois, Jura
Literally meaning ‘yellow wine’, this style of ageing Savignin under a thin veil (‘sous voile’) of yeast is a proud tradition in the Jura, and produces one of the most extraordinary wines in France. This 1990 was such a great find. After ageing like this in barrel, the wine was bottled, and has not moved from the cellars in Arbois since. The wine has a vibrant orange gold colour, and from the first whiff you can sense this wine is so fresh and full of life, in spite of its age. There is a light spice of curry powder on the nose, with fresh ginger and tangy Seville orange. The palate is powerful but with an extraordinarily refined and silky texture. This is a superb example of this style of wine.
