2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos des Papes

2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos des Papes

The care and dedication with which Vincent Avril tends to his winemaking is no more evident than in the complex blending process of this, his single cuvée. During our visit in October, the final assemblage had yet to be crafted, but the assortment of blends was fascinating to taste; with the last foudre acting as the best representation of the final cuvée. In all the casks, the concentration and depth were remarkable, signalling a beautiful texture to support the appealing blackberry, cherry and blackcurrant fruit. Layers of pretty florals and crushed flowers abound; neatly encased in spiced garrigue, a hint of tapenade and what Vincent describes as his all important ‘Burgundian precision’. This is an exceptional wine from a first class producer.
