2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Sanctus Santorum, Clos St. Jean

2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Sanctus Santorum, Clos St. Jean

This legendary wine needs no introduction. The ‘holy of holies’ of Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from 100% Grenache vines planted in 1905. It is aged in just one 600-litre demi-muid cask for 12 months and its 800 bottle production is usually shipped entirely to the USA. We have been fortunate enough once again to receive a tiny allocation of this ‘monumental effort’ (Robert Parker). Opulent, rich and exciting, this wine is incredibly intense and fragrant with scents of wild strawberries, cherries, blackberries, vanilla and lavender. The palate is inky and dense with fine, grippy tannins and fresh acidity; finishing with a compelling smokiness that is dazzlingly long and – quite simply – magnificent.
