2009 Hermitage Les Bessards, Delas Frères

2009 Hermitage Les Bessards, Delas Frères

One of the finest Hermitages of the vintage. The grapes come exclusively from the oldest plot within the renowned area of "Les Bessards", at the heart of Hermitage hill. Deep purple in the glass, this wine is full-bodied, brooding, concentrated and muscular, with a particularly dense tannic structure and superb balance. Its rich fruit flavours fill the mouth. Vivid blackberries, violets, and black olives resonate with a dart of heather and gunflint on the finish. Exquisite. (Robert Parker: 99-100 points)

Tasting notes

Every bit as profound as the 2010, yet in a more voluptuous, lower acid, hedonistic style, the inky colored 2009 Hermitage les Bessards (aged all in new French oak) offers incredible intensity and depth in its black raspberry, toasted bread, graphite and spice-like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, massively endowed and with a wealth of raw material, it has high, yet sweet tannin and a finish that just won't quit. Give it 4-5 years and drink it over the following 3-4 decades. Unfortunately, this is made in tiny quantities, but count yourself lucky if you were able to grab a few bottles of either the '09 or '10. Drink 2019-2049

With an impressive female winemaker, Claire Darnaud, at the helm since 2010 (though with experience there dating back to 1996), and considerable investment in the cellar to move to the historic town centre, the wines here are some of the more refined in the region. Careful never to use more than 40% new oak, Claire is a master of her craft.
