2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

The blend for the 2007 was not assembled when we visited so we therefore tasted the major component parts. The note that follows is to give an idea of the resultant style.

Fresh, peppery nuanced aromas of berry and cherry. The palate shows notes of cassis, blackberry and liquorice, as well as the tapenade type nuances so typical of Mourvèdre. There is an appealing sweet attack, with a layered depth to the fruit. Beaucastel captures valuable freshness and backbone on account of the high Mourvèdre content which seems to have excelled in the late season conditions of 2007. The Grenache shows admirable ripeness; very generous - and the Mourvèdre is impeccable. Given that these two varieties constitute the bulk of the blend (65%), a very fine Beaucastel is in prospect.
