2004 Rasteau, Gourt de Mautens
An assemblage of 70% Grenache, 15% old vine Carignan, 10% Mourvèdre and the remainder split out between, Syrah, Counoise, Vaccarèse and Muscardin. Deep and dark in appearance with a purple hue, the aromas here are captivating: ripe, pure blackberry, woodsmoke, pepper, spice all evident. The palate is at once fresh and intense; cassis, plum/damson, with a confiture edge, liquorice too and a distinct savoury, peppery accent. Very natural in style, and earthy and mineral in character too, with remarkably fine, silky tannins leading to a long, lingering finish. This does not lack concentration but the lasting impression is one of sheer finesse rather than volume.
