2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos des Papes

2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos des Papes

In Vincent Avril’s opinion, 2003 has the makings of a truly great vintage: again he focuses on the natural density of fruit, and maintains that the wine’s acidity is extraordinarily bright for such a warm year. As at Vieux Télégraphe, we tasted three different cuvées which make up the component parts of the finished wine. The first was a fifty-fifty Grenache and Syrah blend fermented together to give a superbly full wine maintaining the natural power one would normally expect only from a fine Mourvèdre cuvée. The second was Grenache/Syrah, which concentrated more on intense black fruits, verging on fruit compote, and the final one was a blend of all three varieties, but with Grenache as the predominant grape and with only 5% Syrah. This cuvée had a delicious sweetness of fruit, and a fine opulence. The combined blend married these three styles beautifully to create a superbly complex wine with real longevity. The 2003 is certainly Clos des Papes at its best.
