Three years on, it is much easier to write positively about the 2001 vintage than it was at the time of picking the grapes. The climatic conditions of the year were testing, highlighting why some growers have a significantly greater reputation than their equally well-located neighbours. La Chapelle is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through meticulous vineyard management, and why, if managed correctly, these longer-ripening vintages, particularly for Syrah, make wines of real complexity and balance. It is a wine deep in colour with rich dark toffee aromas. In the palate it is full of oriental spices with dense black fruit flavours, a beautiful balance between its natural weight and harmony and a full and fresh finish. This is a wonderful example of why 2001 is now rightly being reassessed as a vintage of very high class indeed for the top wines. It is by no means a uniform year, but the best will be considered as truly outstanding with real age worthiness. 2001 La Chapelle, one of the icons of the entire Rhône Valley, is a remarkable wine.
