2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans, Domaine de Montille

Mitans lies plum in the middle of the Volnay slope. Winemaker Brian Sieve decided on 100% whole bunch fruit for this small cuvée, whose yields are invariably tiny. The results are impressive: a pale colour with a delicate perfume of peonies and cherries. It is light, elegant, and rather beautiful. The tannins are fine-grained and slick.

Tasting notes

The 2019 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru went through malolactic on the skins during fermentation and is 100% whole cluster. It offers crunchy, tertiary red berry fruit on the nose; plenty of sous-bois here. The palate is medium-bodied with peppery black fruit, the whole stem component a little too prominent for me and rather defining this Loire-like Volnay on the finish.
