2005 Château de Fargues, Sauternes

2005 Château de Fargues, Sauternes

Without doubt the greatest sweet white wine in the world is Château d’Yquem and there are some who argue that you could omit the word sweet and it would still be true. The Lur-Saluce family owned Yquem for centuries before selling to LVMH in 1999. They have lived at neighbouring Château de Fargues since 1472 and have produced fabulous Sauternes at this property since 1943. Tasting both de Fargues and d’Yquem they do indeed seem remarkably similar and it is only side by side in a direct comparison that the additional concentration and extra elegance of Yquem becomes apparent. However, that does come at a considerable price which is what makes Château de Fargues such a great wine purchase. The
2005 is a blend of 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc and seems remarkably pale in colour for Sauternes from a very good vintage. The nose exhibits an intense tropical aroma which leads to a beautiful, streamlined finish. There is great depth and intensity evident, but this sweetness is countered by lovely fresh acidity. This is a very sophisticated style with great length and will keep for a quarter of a century. In time Alexandre de Lur-Saluces hopes this will rival the 1947. I think that their most illustrious neighbour has a real challenge to meet.
