2022 Château Branas Grand Poujeaux, Moulis-en-Médoc

2022 Château Branas Grand Poujeaux, Moulis-en-Médoc

Tasted April 2023. 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot. 14.5% ABV. This estate goes from strength to strength and is one of the strongest names in the appelation, with more than a resemblance to Margaux. Appealing nose with dark soft berries, full of perfume and floral notes. Succulent fruit on the palate with plenty of grip and a seam of phenolic and wet stone freshness. The diversity of soils here have really helped, where the Merlot planted on clay was especially good and adds a fleshy, smooth, sensual element to the palate. This is very likely to be the best vintage ever made at the property.

Tasting notes

Dark ruby in colour, edge of violet reflections; this builds up in tannins pretty quickly through the palate, old school but has real charm, good quality. Savoury black fruits, powerful, drives forward through the palate. Hubert de Boüard consultant. 50% new oak for ageing, with 5% in amphora.

I always love this Moulis, and the 2022 Chateau Branas Grand Poujeaux looks to be terrific. Ripe cherries, assorted blue fruits, leather, and some floral notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins and a plush, already hard-to-resist style.

This is so perfumed and elegant with blue fruit, violets, iodine and sea salt. Lively juiciness here tightened with fine-grained, steady tannins. Umami and crushed stones. Medium body. Delicious.

The 2022 Branas Grand Poujeaux is ripe, succulent and impeccable in its balance. Creamy and beautifully textured, Branas is a delightful wine that will drink well early but also has the stuffing to age well for years to come. Tasted two times.
