2020 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Rouge, Pessac-Léognan

2020 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Rouge, Pessac-Léognan

The 2020 Larrivet Haut-Brion is a great example of the balance that can be found in the vintage. Notes of ripe plums and berries on the nose, while the tannins are sumptuous, with a lovely mouthfeel. All the merlot was vinified in amphorae. This is an outstanding wine: one to watch.

Tasting notes

A firm, silky red with blackberry, walnut and a hint of iron. Medium body. Fine tannins. Nice energy to this.

Well worked aromatics, expressive while still being subtle. Great location just down the road from Haut-Bailly, this has plenty of power through the core of the wine with dark fruits, rosemary and sage spices - good quality. Shuts down on the finish a little. A yield of 28hl/ha, 100% new oak for Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, and entirely amphora for the Merlots. Tasted twice.

92/100

The 2020 Larrivet Haut-Brion was cropped at 29hl/ha and aged in new oak barrels, the Merlot component mostly aged in clay amphorae. It has an intense and powerful nose, but without quite the same precision as, say, the La Louvière that I tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with a minty opening, supple and most pastille-like, revealing veins of blood orange toward the finish. Good length, but I am seeking more complexity.

Dark purplish crimson. Complex, rather luscious nose. Extremely sweet and flattering – perhaps not the most refreshing wine of this appellation in 2020. This is a wine for admirers of opulence. Velvety texture underpinned by some pretty emphatic tannins.
