2005 Château Pontet-Canet, Cru Classé Pauillac

2005 Château Pontet-Canet, Cru Classé Pauillac

Rich and dense on the nose, the aromas here suggest a flamboyant
ripeness and a rich, punchy berry-laden palate to follow. The palate does
not disappoint – rich, concentrated – this makes a bold statement
though finely-balanced. There is a pleasing freshness to the fruit, which
shows Cabernet clearly in the ascendancy with creamy coated, sweet
cassis and blackberry, with notes of smoky mocha and vanillia too. A
firm yet fine tannic grip holds this volume in check, it is however an
undeniably big and chewy wine. This is certainly assured of a bright
future. Some may argue that this is the style of high scores, but no taster
could deny that this is a very serious effort in terms of both stature and
quality. Indeed the quality gained is surely ample reward for the efforts
of Monsieur Tesseron’s team at the resurgent Pontet-Canet.
