The 2005 is a blend of 90% Merlot with 5% each of Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon. The appearance is very intense and opaque, Troplong has seldom been shy of colour. The aromas here are of wonderfully ripe, blackberry fruit, with smoky, toasted oak nuances too. Very much in a muscular mould on the palate, there is plenty of substance here, with a dense core of damson-like blackfruit and notes of cassis with a creamy vanillin coating. The structure is very assertive at this stage, though the tannins are finely expressed and gripping. It retains freshness throughout and possesses a fine lingering finish.
