2004 Château Margaux, 1er Cru Margaux

2004 Château Margaux, 1er Cru Margaux

Proprietor Corrine Mentzelopoulos and General Manager Paul Pontallier were equally enthusiastic about the success of their Merlot and Cabernet fruit when tasting the 2004’s with them early in April. ‘I think that the 2004 is a classic, it reminds me of the 1996’ commented Paul. If this assessment proves accurate, the ’04 is destined for stardom. Certainly the grand vin shows enormous promise at this stage of evolution. Floral, fresh and impressively pure on the nose, and with a palate that displays exquisite breeding and sophistication. There is a seamless, textural quality here and a taut, underlying structure. A gentle grip of tannin throughout with a freshness that leads to fine persistence of flavours. This is undoubtedly a beautifully honed Margaux. Very pure, very balanced, very Margaux - a notable success.
