2002 Château Latour, 1er Cru Pauillac

2002 Château Latour, 1er Cru Pauillac

Wine of the vintage? This was the word ‘en primeur’ and if anything its status has been confirmed. A very rich effort with intense Cabernet fruit to the fore. This is a serious effort that will bear comparison with any vintage from the last five or six. Comprising 74% Cabernet Sauvignon with 25% Merlot with the little that remains taken from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this impressive effort owes so much to the late-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon. Certainly opaque in the glass, aromas here combine a mineral/earthy quality and terrifically ripe blackcurrant. The palate exhibits a wonderful expansiveness, rich, dense and remarkably structured. It goes without saying that the purity that one has come to expect is present as is a noticeable fresh accent. A sublime Latour that belongs in, and will remain in, many a cellar for several decades or more. Exceptional.
