2000 Château Gloria, St-Julien

2000 Château Gloria, St-Julien

With an interesting and unique history, this property was not included in the 1855 classification as the parcels of vineyard that now comprise Chateau Gloria were in the hands of its more prestigious neighbours. Thanks to the founding father and son team of Alfred and Henri Martin the property was built up piecemeal through the purchase of parcels of vineyards from Ch Beychevelle, Ch Leoville-Poyferre, Ch Gruard-Larose. Henri Martin continued to build upon the estate through the introduction of numerous improvements in the cellar, including stainless steel fermentation vessels. Robert Parker rates numerous vintages as equal to classified growths, this wine has already opened up nicely but also has a lot of life left in it.

This beautiful Bordeaux fruit bomb offers abundant notes of black currants, herbs, cherries, cedar, and spice box. Fleshy and medium to full-bodied with no hard edges, the 2000 Gloria is a total thrill to consume. Enjoy it over the next decade, perhaps longer

Château Gloria

Château Gloria offers Bordeaux drinkers classed-growth quality St-Julien without the price tag. It is the result of founder Henri Martin’s ambition to own a classed growth. During the 1940s he started putting together small parcels of vines, starting with 0.6 hectares from Château Lynch-Bages. Henri only purchased from existing classed growths and his estate gradually formed from châteaux including Léoville-Poyferré, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville-Barton, Duhart-Milon and Gruaud-Larose. Although unclassified, the quality of the soils and vines is clear. Henri went on to realise his dream, taking ownership of Grand Cru Classé Château St-Pierre in 1981, running both properties in tandem. Gloria is now run by Henri’s daughter Françoise and her husband Jean-Louis Triaud, who have undertaken significant renovations and investment, completely overhauling the winemaking facilities in 2015 and Château Gloria continues to go from strength to strength.
