2007 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Riserva DOCG, Villa Bucci, Marche

2007 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Riserva DOCG, Villa Bucci, Marche

Villa Bucci is famous for the extraordinary complexity of its Verdicchio, and is described as a “reference point winery for the Marche” by Antonio Galloni. The wines are beautiful when young, but with bottle age show the delicious nutty complexity that makes them truly appealing. This 2007 Riserva has notes of almond flowers, honey and preserved citrus peel on the nose, opening out to a palate of creamy-edged lemon, warm straw and smoke. Beautifully layered, carrying through to a long and appealing finish.

Villa Bucci

On the eastern coast of Italy, near the port of Ancona, Villa Bucci is the standout producer of the Castelli di Jesi DOCG. The estate itself is some 400 hectares in total, with just 26 hectares planted with vines. The majority, 21 hectares, are Verdicchio, spread across six vineyards. Current incumbent Ampelio Bucci is helped by legendary consultant oenologist Giorgio Grai, who’s worked here for almost 30 years. The Riserva is only made in the best vintages, from the estate’s old vines that average between 40 and 50 years old. It’s then aged in 70 year old oak barrels for two years, a remarkable approach resulting in a remarkable wine
