2004 Birba, La Gerla, Tuscany

Intense black cherry fruit on the nose with hints of olive. Lovely richness and a dry attack of ripe fruit with a savoury edge, this has a flowing texture and benchmark Sangiovese acidity. Birba displays a fabulous fine-grained tannin structure. In style, very much like classic brunello, but with a lightness of touch on the mid palate that makes it more immediately approachable.
