2004 Guarnellotto, Chianti Classico Riserva, Castello di San Sano, Tuscany
Though the normale 2006 is good, this is three steps up. Perhaps it is the contribution of old vine Canaiolo, rounding out the Sangiovese, that makes this work so well. Very deep colour with an intriguing nose of spice, tobacco and red fruits. The palate is very smooth and refined, with real density, but at the same time displaying a supple finesse. Lovely balance, with the acidity countered by the fruit and finely polished tannins. This is matured in large botti rather than barrique and the wood is very well integrated. This is a fine wine and very well crafted. Outstanding.
