Montecastro Bodegas

Montecastro Bodegas was founded in 2000, when a group of friends decided to start an estate in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, one of Spain's most celebrated winemaking regions. They planted 27 hectares of vines, which now, although not certified, are farmed using organic practices. In 2012, top estate Hacienda Monasterio became the major investor in Montecastro, and the wines are now made by one of Spain’s most talented winemaking teams. Their vineyards are planted at high altitudes - up to 923 metres above sea level - which means that despite the richness and power of the wine, the cooler aspect imparts an impressive freshness and purity. Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are grown across five different vineyards. Once hand harvested, the grapes are taken to the purpose-built modern winery near Burgos, where traditional winemaking skills meet state of the art technology. Ageing on the lees in both new and used Bordeaux barrels for up to 20 months allows the wine plenty of time to develop its fine flavours. Montecastro has received high praise from wine critics, and established a loyal following of wine lovers.
