2018 Storia di Ecce Fructus, Clos Culombu

2018 Storia di Ecce Fructus, Clos Culombu

This could be one of our favourite new discoveries. It’s a blend of obscure but characterful local Corsican varieties like Sciaccarellu and Aleaticu. An expressive, peppery, red fruit nose is followed by a smooth, supple and generous palate, with a surprising freshness. Accomplished winemaking avoids rusticity but retains the varieties’ naturally wild characters. It only improves as it opens up. It is bright, pure, mineral and elegant. A revelation.

Clos Culombu

After qualifying as a vet, Etienne Suzzoni took over the family domaine in 1983, inheriting a well-run estate established by his father, who had the foresight to plant Niellucciu (Sangiovese) vines in the early 1970s. Etienne has put in the hard graft ever since, cultivating local varieties. The estate now comprises 64 hectares of organically farmed vines, 12 hectares of olive groves and a further 30 hectares of grazing land for their large herd of cattle to roam. These island wines, produced between the sea and the mountains on old granitic soils in the northwest of Corsica, are well worth attention.
