2019 Sancerre Les Monts Damnés, Gérard Boulay

2019 Sancerre Les Monts Damnés, Gérard Boulay

This is Sancerre’s best known and greatest site. It is a dramatic slope of Kimmeridgian terres blanches in Chavignol that wraps around the hillside. Boulay's is charged with the site's natural power and depth, and has layer upon layer of energy and drive. Its ample weight and scintillating concentration promise it is built for greater things. Don't be afraid to cellar this, it will only improve.

Tasting notes

It might not be a blockbuster like some other top names, but this quiet, understated wine says all that needs to be said about the Monts Damnés lieu-dit. Decant before drinking or, better still, mature for another two or more years. Old vines (45 years on average), high-density planting and an absence of chemical treatments since 1990 all contribute to a wine with unerring precision and purity.
