2016 Sancerre Génération XIX, Domaine Alphonse Mellot

2016 Sancerre Génération XIX, Domaine Alphonse Mellot

Produced from 108 year old vines on Kimmeridgian soil. There’s great balance between bright green fruits and savoury touches of mineral and flint here. It’s very pure: flavours fill the mouth then linger over the long finish, carried through with the fine acidity. Very impressive.

Alphonse Mellot

Alphonse Mellot is one of Sancerre’s most historic estates, with a persuasive claim to being the oldest extant producer in the region. At least nineteen generations of Mellots have made wine here, and current incumbent Alphonse, the sixth of his name, proudly upholds their legacy. He trained in Bordeaux, Dijon and Montpellier before beginning work alongside his father (Alphonse Sr) in 1991. One of the Loire’s earliest proponents of biodynamic viticulture, he’s ensured the domaine has retained its status as one of Sancerre’s finest.
