The 2017 Piedlong is gorgeous. Notes of crushed herbs, wet stones, and ripe dark cherries and pure strawberry fruit swirl from the glass with huge energy. The palate is tense and textured, with wonderful precision and salinity on the finish. Long and impressive.
Yields were a paltry 12 hectoliters per hectare in the Brunier's Piedlong parcel, so the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Piedlong contains only 85% Grenache (50% whole cluster), while the balance is Mourvèdre. It offers a lovely array of floral and herbal notes layered over raspberry and cherry fruit on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied but seemingly weightless. Fine and elegant already, it finishes long, with pure, almost crystalline lattice-like fruit and silky tannins.
Appreciably nuanced for a special cuvée, with good persistence and weight.
