2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache de Pierre, Domaine Giraud

2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache de Pierre, Domaine Giraud

A head-turning cuvée produced entirely from old vine Grenache, grown on the sandy soils of Pignan and the classic galets roulées of Le Crau. Deep in the glass, the nose is exuberant, with fresh, deep, damsony fruit and notes of garrigue. On the palate it shows both great definition and terrific proportion, just falling the right side of heady. There is a layered sense to the damson and cherry fruit, as well as a scented herb and spice quality, and sweet notes of liquorice. What impresses is the cool sense of ripeness and the stony mineral traces on the finish. Nothing baked, just a wonderfully natural expression of fruit and terroir. Sensational Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the best vintage yet from this rising Domaine.
