2005 Hermitage Le Gréal, Marc Sorrel

2005 Hermitage Le Gréal, Marc Sorrel

Marc Sorrel owns 2.5 hectares in Hermitage and many critics suggest he produces one of the top wines of this commune each vintage. The name Gréal comes from an amalgam of the two vineyards from which the grapes are sourced. 10% is drawn from the parcel of Les Greffieux on the lower slope of the Hill of Hermitage, the rest from the highly rated Le Méal vineyard. Both the harmony and intensity of the 2004 and 2005 vintages have astounded me on the few occasions that I have tasted this wine. Le Gréal has a lifted perfumed nose of cassis, white pepper, sweet spice and incense. The first impression on the palate is one of harmony and balance, the tannins are dense, silky and fine and the volume of fruit gives the wine great intensity without taking away any elegance. This delicious wine lingers on the palate for a long time afterwards.
