2022 Château Bourgneuf, Pomerol

Tasted April 2023. 85% Merlot 15% Cabernet Franc. 9 hectare property. Pure blackcurrant and plum, with savoury edges. Densely packed, ripe tannins, and a smooth texture. Some brighter berry fruit on the finish. A very classic Pomerol this vintage.

Tasting notes

An estate that was always going to be structured in this type of vintage due to its location right next to Trotanoy with super-charged gravel-clay soils. Striking in its wave of violet and peony aromatics, followed by a musuclar body. One of the most structured Bourgneufs that I have tasted En Primeur, with plentify cassis, bilberry, dark fruits, graphite and smoked earth, tightly gripping tannins on the finish. Good quality, will need time. 9ha, harvest September 5 to 15.

Tasted on multiple occasions, the 2022 Château Bourgneuf never failed to impress. Checking in as 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a deep purple hue as well ample ripe cherry and mulberry fruit, notes of Christmas spice, graphite, and leather, medium to full body, ripe tannins, and a great finish.

Offering up aromas of sweet blackberries and cherries mingled with licorice, violets and black truffle, the 2022 Bourgneuf is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit, supple tannins and a long, resonant finish. From nine hectares of holdings situated below Trotanoy and next to La Cabanne, much of which are characterized by clay-rich gravels, this promising property, now working with consultant Thomas Duclos, is really beginning to exploit all its potential.

A rich and bold Bourgneuf, this is full-bodied and pretty with slightly dried fruit, with velvety polished tannins. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc.

The 2022 Bourgneuf is a dark, sumptuous wine. Black cherry, gravel, spice, licorice and dried herbs are all finely delineated in a Pomerol that offers tons of richness as well as energy. All the classic Bourgneuf signatures are beautifully dialed up. Over the last few vintages in particular, Bourgneuf has been quite a bit richer texturally than in the past. The 2022 is another step in that direction. Tasted twice.
