2008 Château Troplong-Mondot, Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion

2008 Château Troplong-Mondot, Grand Cru Classé St-Emilion

Made almost entirely from Merlot, the 2008 Troplong boasts dusky, slightly smoky, dark cherry and damson fruits on the nose. On the palate, there is a scented, almost curranty quality, damson fruit, and notes of chocolate and fruitcake-like spice. Mineral, mouth-filling, there is a naturally assertive structure here, but it is far from over-extracted. The freshness and bright acidity of the vintage lifts the substantial fruit and leads to a long, poised finish. A fine, attractive Troplong-Mondot, more accessible than in some recent vintages, but none the worse for it.
