Batailley, apart from the quality of its wine, has another claim to fame. It was the last Cru Classé property to be split in two. This took place in 1942 when the owners Marcel and Francois Borie decided to divide the property to avoid inheritance tax. And so were born Châteaux Batailley, owned by Marcel and Haut-Batailley, owned by Francois. Both retained their fifth-growth classification and both are still owned today by the Borie family. This 2002 is deep and dark in colour with an aromatic nose of sweet blackberry, cassis and plum notes. The palate is pure and medium bodied but with lovely presence to the fruit. More flesh than anticipated but still the characteristic backbone of firm, structured tannins and a fresh bite of acidity. The finish is well-balanced and surprisingly long with plenty of freshness and minerality.
