Passionate about food and with an appetite for hands on craftsmanship, it’s little surprise that Richard Kershaw found himself drawn into the captivating world of wine. Kershaw worked in Bordeaux, California, Chile, Germany, and Hungary before qualifying as a Master of Wine, and settling in South Africa, where he now runs his small, but mighty operation in Elgin. In the basin of the Hottentots-Holland mountains, Elgin enjoys a cool climate, a diverse terroir and undulating topography. This, coupled with Kershaw’s self-proclaimed geekiness, creates wines that reflect a true sense of place. Slower, more gradual ripening of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, sees wines with more depth and complexity. While expertly matched clones, soils and barrels, and a non-interventionist approach, craft wines that authentically capture the essence of the region.
